The Lucknow Obstetrics & Gynaecology Society (LOGS) was founded in 1971 through the initiative and vision of a small group of committed obstetricians and gynaecologists. The Society began modestly, with only a few dedicated members who met informally to discuss academic developments and clinical challenges of the specialty.
The earliest spark for the Society’s formation is credited to Prof. A. D. Engineer, a renowned and respected figure who headed the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at King George’s Medical College (1953–1976). Together with Dr. Chandrawati, who played a pivotal role in initiating the Society—famously beginning its journey during a small gathering fondly remembered as a “Samosa Party”—the foundation of LOGS was laid with the intention of building an academic community in Lucknow.
In its early years, LOGS conducted a limited number of meetings and academic interactions. However, the Society’s vision remained strong, inspired by Dr. Chandrawati’s experience of attending a conference/CME in Pune, which motivated her to create a similar academic culture in Lucknow.
Although active since 1971, the Society was formally registered in 1999, marking a new phase of structured growth and institutional recognition.
The year 1999 was a turning point, coinciding with the hosting of the first AICOG in Lucknow, which brought national attention to the city’s academic potential and strengthened LOGS’ footprint within FOGSI’s national network.
From 1999 onward, LOGS steadily expanded its academic activities, organizing numerous CMEs, workshops, and collaborative events. This era witnessed the Society’s transition from a small local group into a respected professional body with increasing participation from clinicians across government, private, and academic sectors.
Over two decades, LOGS consolidated its structure, broadened membership, and fostered partnerships with national committees, medical colleges, and peer societies.
A major milestone in the recent history of LOGS has been the leadership of Dr. Preeti Kumar, whose exemplary vision and commitment were demonstrated through the successful organization of the landmark AICOG 2020 in Lucknow. This national conference not only showcased the academic strength of the region but also firmly established LOGS as an active and influential society within FOGSI.
Since 2020, LOGS has witnessed rapid expansion in academic activities, including large-scale conferences, state-level and national CMEs, conclaves, workshops, public health initiatives, advocacy programs, and collaborative events with various FOGSI committees, UP societies, and national institutions.
Under the guidance of dynamic leadership teams, LOGS has grown into a robust and vibrant academic community.
As of 2025, the Society proudly stands at a strength of 542 members, reflecting decades of sustained dedication, collaboration, and progress.
From a small nucleus of visionary clinicians in 1971 to a leading professional society today, LOGS has remained committed to strengthening obstetrics and gynaecology in the region. Guided by the foundational ideals of Prof. A.D. Engineer and Dr. Chandrawati—and carried forward through the committed leadership of successive office bearers including Dr. Priti Kumar—LOGS continues to promote academic excellence, ethical clinical practice, and the advancement of women’s health.
The Society remains dedicated to expanding its academic footprint, nurturing young professionals, and contributing meaningfully to national priorities in maternal and reproductive health.
